The aim of the canteen business is to address food insecurity and hunger among children who may not have access to adequate food at home due to financial or other difficulties. By providing a nutritious breakfast, lunches and recess breaks, the canteen business aims to improve children’s health, well-being, and academic performance, as well as promote a sense of community and social connection.
Children who are experiencing disadvantage, poverty, and are at risk of starting their school day without a nutritious breakfast. By feeding these these children with a healthy breakfast and good food for lunch and recess it will improve their health and well-being, and their ability to learn and engage in school. The target may include children who come from low-income families, families experiencing food insecurity, and families facing other challenges such as homelessness or domestic violence but all children are able to buy healthy food from the canteens.
Our canteen business model is unique in the Maitland LGA in which we work.
